Customer: GridCars
Application: 22kW AC EV chargers for home, commercial, and public charging networks
EV Charging Solution Detail: 22kW smart AC EV chargers with DLB, OCPP 1.6J integration, and customized platform adaptation

Project Background

South Africa-based GridCars supplies EV charging equipment to different customer groups while also operating a public charging network. Its AC charging requirements therefore cover both home and commercial charging applications, as well as chargers that need to connect to its existing charging management platform for public and operator-managed charging scenarios.

To support these different applications, GridCars ordered 1,560 units of XYDF XY AC-E22KW wall-mounted AC EV chargers. Each charger is rated at three-phase 22kW, 32A and features a 4.3-inch display, metal enclosure, 5-meter charging cable, M1 RFID authentication, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity, and OCPP 1.6J support.

Unlike a single-site charging project, these chargers needed to operate across different installation and operating environments while maintaining consistent product configuration and compatibility with the GridCars backend platform.

Project Challenges

Because the chargers would be used across home, commercial, and public charging applications, standard AC charging functionality alone was not enough to meet GridCars’ requirements.

For home and general commercial use, the chargers needed to remain practical and easy to deploy. For units connected to the GridCars operating platform, additional requirements included backend communication, user authentication, remote management, status monitoring, and load management.

The main requirements included:

  • Dynamic Load Balancing through an external MID meter and OCPP
  • Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity
  • RSSI signal strength monitoring
  • Device identification and backend communication adaptation
  • User authentication optimization
  • Remote charging control
  • OCPP charging status and transaction flow optimization
  • Configuration flexibility for different charging scenarios

XYDF Solution

To support GridCars’ combination of home, commercial, and public charging applications, XYDF used the XY AC-E22KW as a standardized 22kW AC charging platform and customized its load management and OCPP communication functions according to the customer’s operating requirements.

The XY AC-E22KW is a three-phase 22kW, 32A wall-mounted charger equipped with a 4.3-inch display, 5-meter charging cable, M1 RFID authentication, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity. Its metal enclosure and IP54 protection rating allow it to be used in a range of indoor and outdoor installation environments.

For load management, XYDF implemented DLB through an external MID meter combined with OCPP communication, allowing charging power to be adjusted according to the available electrical capacity at the installation site. This makes the solution suitable for residential properties, commercial parking facilities, and locations with multiple AC chargers.

For network and device management, XYDF added RSSI signal strength monitoring to help technical teams evaluate wireless connectivity. Device identification and communication logic were also adapted to match GridCars’ backend requirements.

For OCPP platform integration, the XYDF engineering team customized the charger’s user authentication, charging status reporting, transaction flow, and remote-control logic, helping connected chargers maintain stable and consistent communication with the GridCars management platform.

XYDF 22KW EV charing solution for gridcars

Project Value

Through this cooperation, XYDF supplied 1,560 smart 22kW AC EV chargers together with platform and technical adaptation support, covering home charging, commercial charging, and public charging network applications.

Compared with a single charging station project, this cooperation demonstrates the flexibility of a standardized charging platform across different end-use scenarios. The same charger platform can support relatively independent home charging applications while also integrating into commercial and public charging operations through OCPP, DLB, and backend customization.

This case demonstrates XYDF’s ability to provide large-scale EV charger supply, OCPP platform integration, and customized EV charging solutions for charging operators, distribution partners, and EV charging solution providers.
